Living Without Constipation
Posted in Constipation
There are millions of sufferers of constipation in America. The problem arises from the fact that people blithely go through life without thinking about their digestive health, thinking that a bit of sluggishness is normal. Unfortunately by the time you actually develop a problem, it can take a while to get on top of it with the necessary diet and lifestyle changes.
A better alternative is to adopt a few basic diet principles now, so that you never have a problem in the first place, Fortunately there are plenty of effective home remedies for treating constipation once it occurs. When experiencing constipation it is important to view the remedies holistically as all will have slightly different effects, and for the best relief you should try a number simultaneously.
Try to avoid laxatives unless nothing else is working, as these can irritate your stomach with repeated use, and only treat the symptoms – not the root problem. This is particularly true when pregnant. Although constipation in pregnancy is a common problem, laxatives should be avoided.
Getting more fiber is often the best constipation home remedy. Increasing your water intake is important when constipated. This will ensure your stools remain hydrated and become easier to pass. Try to eat more fiber too. Dietary fiber plays two important roles. First, it gives your colon some substance to push through more easily. Second, it ferments in the gut and helps the growth of the good bacteria that help you break down food.
The effects of extra water and fiber might not take effect immediately. If you want to try something else while waiting for your system to process the extra fiber and water, you can try some light exercise. This can at times help your body to force through any blockages. Light exercise is often enough – try just walking round the block for a start. Bike riding is particularly effective – if you can stomach it!
