Sugar — essential for life but a problem for some

The cells of the human body (and those of animals too) depend on having a source of sugar available to fuel the constant cellular metabolic activities that keep us alive. But higher than normal amounts of sugar circulating in the bloodstream can be dangerous to health, especially if they lead to diabetes, a permanent condition in which blood sugar levels must be controlled through diet, exercise and. in some cases, special medicines.

Diabetes is a serious disease for which there is no cure, but in many instances it can be prevented by the adoption of an appropriate diet that avoids the types of foods containing the simple sugars that quickly enter the blood after being eaten.

In recent times there has been abundant advice and warnings in the media about the need to modify eating habits to avoid the possibility of developing diabetes. Advice that appears to be ignored by a great number of people according statistics in the 2011 National Diabetes Fact Sheet released in January by several health authorities — including the Center for Disease Control and the American Diabetes Association.

The Fact Sheet states that there are an estimated 7 million Americans who are unaware that they have diabetes and there are many additional millions who have prediabetes, a related serious condition that can be treated and prevented from developing to the more serious stages of diabetes.

Diabetes is frequently being diagnosed in the prime years of life
The following figures from the Fact Sheet show the estimated new cases by age groups and provide an alarming picture for many of us who are reaching the middle years of group 2.

Group1: Age 20 to 44 – estimated new cases of diabetes were 465,000
Group 2: Age 45 to 64 – estimated new cases of diabetes were 1,052,000
Group 3: Age 65 and older – estimated new cases of diabetes were 390,000

Diabetes takes time to develop
Diabetes develops gradually over time as the accumulated effects of a poor dietary routine and a sedentary lifestyle begin to become evident — until one day, when visiting a doctor, for whatever reason, we are surprised to find out that we have developed diabetes or perhaps prediabetes, a related condition that often eventually leads to full-blown diabetes if not treated properly.

Heed the warning
If you are over 40 years old, possibly overweight, engaged in little or no physical activity, you could be a perfect candidate to join the ranks of the diabetic — a life of much diminished quality, so take warning, check with a doctor. All it takes to find out is a simple blood test.

If you want to keep your good posture and health, a Sobakawa pillow is your answer. Most people today spend most of their time behind a desk on a computer, or bending over for work, putting their neck, back, and shoulders under strain and stress.

The problem with straining your back is that it becomes a habit. When you put your body under stress, it is like a continuous cycle and becomes hard to stop; hence, deforming yourself. Endless chronic pain starts. You must remember that the neck is a crucial part in the human body, it is attached to very important parts and controls very important areas; hence, if your neck starts to hurt, than most probably the rest will start to hurt.

A Sobakawa pillow is a good remedy for this. They are purposely designed to align your poster and massage your body, allowing you to wake up fresh, energetic and relaxed.

Making a habit of using the pillow, your body will begin to get used to it, and you will feel relaxed. If perhaps you snore, the Sobakawa cloud pillow is one of the best snoring remedies available. You will notice that both the bad sound and the neck pain will go away as soon as you use it.

An important point you need to take in to consideration while purchasing a Sobakawa pillow is that they come in a variety of shapes and sizes. They are designed differently to fit easily into where you want to use it; there are home pillows or outdoor pillows. It is not uncommon to find people at work or on a plane carrying their own neck pillow.

Remember, if you are going to buy a neck pillow, you want to buy one that is best for you. You might have to pay a bit extra. You will find, however, that it is worth it. Purchasing the perfect pillow, your body will start to feel the difference, and you will feel the difference in your life.

Want to give it a try? You can buy Sobakawa Pillows on Amazon.com for under $20.

Green tea is produced from the leaves of an Asian plant called Camilla sinensis. In recent times, the press has touted the benefits of green tea. This tea’s antioxidant content helps prevent and treat an array of medical ailments. The Maryland University Medical Center advises consuming a minimum of 2 cups daily to experience any results.

Antioxidant Content
The antioxidants in green tea called polyphenols deliver potent health benefits. The cell protective and antioxidant properties of these polyphenols are shown to be greater than the antioxidant strength of vitamin E and vitamin C. One specific type of polyphenol called EGCG, is the most active type in green tea and responsible for most of the health benefits of this beverage.

Skin Health Benefits
Green tea polyphenols provide protection and healing to our the cells of our skin. A spray that features cooled green tea can be used to treat mild sunburn. This treatment minimizes inflammation and calms irritation. Making use of green tea for small wounds, like blemishes, can be effective for avoiding infections since the tea possesses anti-microbial properties.

Freshens the Air
Green tea antioxidants neutralize and absorb odors. Historically, green tea has been placed in different rooms in the home to freshen the air. Green tea leaves can easily be placed in a number of small bowls and distributed throughout the entire home, this includes the refrigerator where it can take the place of baking soda. Green tea leaves also provide a pleasant scent. Impress an area with the mild pleasing aroma of green tea by putting a handful of the leaves in some simmering water.

Cancer Prevention
Green tea polyphenols are shown to fight cancer. In accordance with Amy Yee, a biochemistry professor at Tufts University , polyphenols interfere with cancer development by suppressing the signaling network of this disease. Professor Lee suggests drinking 2 or 3 cups every day for cancer preventative effects. Green tea’s beneficial properties are linked to protection against colon, breast, stomach and promote cancers. The benefits of green tea may also hinder the human papilloma virus, a virus that is linked to the onset of cervical cancer.

TMJ, also known as the Temporomandibular joint, connects the mandible or the lower jaw to the temporal bone or the skull in front of the ear. One condition associated with this is TMJ syndrome or TMJ disorder. This condition can cause a person some discomfort and can lead to problems in other areas as well.

TMJ syndrome can be a consequence of trauma to the jaw joint or the jaw like a jolting injury to the neck, head or face. It can also be caused by an individual’s habits, disease or wear and tear due to aging. Dentists believe that the TMJ disorder arises from problems with the muscles found in the jaw or with the parts of the jaw itself. In addition, according to the Academy of General Dentistry or the AGD, there are some physical and mental activities that can aggravate the disorder.

Symptoms of TMJ

Probably the most common among the TMJ symptoms is the pain in the jaw joint or the chewing muscles. This pain is usually described as a dull ache. Some people may even experience no pain yet still have difficulties when it comes to jaw functions. Other signs and symptoms of TMJ include popping or clicking when closing or opening the mouth, an aching in the jaw when yawning, chewing or biting, an earache without the presence of an infection as well as sensitive teeth without any dental problem.

Another sign of this condition is headache. This is especially true when a person goes through recurring tension headaches or frequently wakes up with a headache. An individual who suffers this may also feel some swelling on the side of the face and aching facial pain.

Home Remedies and Treatments

Cool it Down or Warm it Up

When the pain is sharp, applying a couple of cold packs will bring fast relief. Just wrap a few ice cubes in a soft cloth and apply it to both sides of your face for 10-15 minutes. Why’s it work? The cold will numb the nerve endings, which in turn dulls the pain messages being sent to your brain.

If the pain is more of a dull ache than a sharp pain, then heat is a better treatment than ice. To get the most out of this pain-relieving remedy, soak a couple of soft cloths in warm water and apply to both sides of your face for up to 20 minutes. Note: As you go, the cloths will cool, so you’ll want to run them under hot water a few times during the 20 minutes. Why’s this work? It not only will increase circulation to the area, but will relax the muscles of your jaw, therefore easing the pain

Mighty Minerals

Adding 500 mg of powdered calcium and 250 mg of powdered magnesium to your morning juice will quickly relieve the pain of TMJ/TMD. Powdered forms of both are ideal because they will be more easily absorbed by your body, but in a pinch, capsules will do. Why’s it work? Taken together, these minerals are known to promote muscle relaxation, which is just what you need for those tense jaw muscles that are causing you pain.

Massage it Away

Massage is a great way to relieve the jaw tightness that you experience with TMJ disorder. Here’s how to do it:

The first way is to relax the muscles by your ears, which are very near to the temporomandibular joints. To do it, just open your mouth and place your forefingers on the areas that are sore and massage in gentle circles. Once the muscles relax, close your mouth and repeat a few times.

Another way to go about it is from the inside of your mouth. To do this, open your mouth and explore the area with your forefinger until you find the spot that’s sore. Massage it using the same technique as above, making sure to get in as close to the joint as possible.

If you want to take it one step further, you can massage the muscles located on either side of your neck. Why’s it work? It helps to reduce the tension in your neck, which can add to the pain you feel in your jaw.

An Ounce of Prevention…

Avoid chewing gum and eating overly chewy or crunchy foods. Why? Every time you chew, you tense your jaw muscles.

Become a side (or back) sleeper. Why? Sleeping on your stomach causes you to turn your head to one side or the other. Doing so can cause neck strain and misalignment of your jaw.

Learn to hold your tongue! When you’re under stress, it”s natural to respond by clenching your jaw or grinding your teeth. Practice holding your tongue between your teeth during bouts of stress and see if that helps.

Slow down your caffeine consumption. Why? Caffeine is known to increase muscle tension.

When to Call the Doctor

If the pain is so severe that you can’t open your mouth, call the doctor immediately! If the pain was manageable, so you tried home remedies to treat the symptoms, but are still having problems after 2 weeks of home remedies, it may be time to see a professional. A doctor or dentist can help you by prescribing muscle relaxing prescription medicine. using corticosteroid injections to reduce inflammation and/or making you a custom made mouth guard to help alleviate the symptoms.

Tennis elbow exercises are necessary for permanent and safe tennis elbow treatment. The tennis elbow problem occurs when the tendons connecting your forearm muscles to the lateral epicondyle in your elbow are damaged because of the over and repetitive use of the forearm muscles. If you adhere to a well designed exercise plan, your affected tendons can begin to heal and gain back their strength. Ball squeeze, finger stretch, wrist extension and pronation are examples of a few of these exercises.

Ball squeeze is a very simple exercise. Use your affected hand to hold a flexible ball like a tennis ball. Try to squeeze it as much as you can. Relax for a while and repeat.

Finger stretch is performed without the help of exercise equipments. Keep your affected arm horizontal. Your arm should be straight. Now, you need to move your fingers apart. Try to bring them in horizontal position too. Get them back and repeat.

To perform wrist extension, you have to bend your wrist up and down. Keep your affected arm straight and horizontal in such a way that your palm faces downward. Bend your wrist downward according to your strength. Gradually bend it back to where you started. Now slowly bend it up and again bend it back.

Pronation is performed with the help of a broom stick or any other stick of similar weight. At first, you have to do it keeping your arm bent and then keeping it straight. Stand erect with your arms at two sides. Give a 90 degree bend to your elbow to bring it to a horizontal position. Hold the stick. The stick needs to remain vertical to the ground and face up Using your wrist bend the stick outward and try to make it horizontal. Bring it back to the starting point and repeat. Now, do the same thing keeping your upper arm and fore arm straight and horizontal.

If you have 5 minutes to spare, here’s a great video by Dr. Kahl Goldfarb, D.P.T., C.S.C.S. that explains how to self diagnose tennis elbow. He also takes you through a couple of effective exercises.

Have you ever found yourself wondering how to deal with claustrophobia? Rest assured that you are not alone. Claustrophobia is the fear of being closed in without escape in small spaces; an unreasonable fear that is nevertheless very real.

Since claustrophobia is a type of anxiety disorder, professional treatment is usually similar to treatment for other anxiety disorders. Cognitive therapy, with the goal of changing unreasonable beliefs, is frequently effective. Simply talking through the thoughts that you recall during an attack with a friend may help you recognize your incorrect beliefs and change them to more constructive beliefs.

Another treatment answering “how to deal with claustrophobia” is in vivo exposure. Beginning with the largest area you can tolerate, gradually reduce the size of area you are in until this illness is alleviated. For example, start with spending time in a small room. When this is comfortable for you, move on to an elevator. During this self-treatment , include in the area things that you find soothing, such as a favorite childhood stuffed animal, pillow, or blanket. Play soothing music and light calm-inducing candles.

Another way to deal with Claustrophobia is to use your imagination. Lie back in a comfortable position. (Avoid your bed so that you don’t fall asleep!) Some soft music and candlelight can help set the calm mood. Close your eyes and breathe deeply until you are completely relaxed. Now imagine yourself in the most relaxing scene you can think of. This may be a real place you have visited or one you imagine. Focus on what you smell and feel. Now begin to move into a smaller area that is part of your relaxing scene. For example, if you are imagining a beach scene, imagine yourself walking into a hut on the beach. Continue to do this, imagining how relaxing it is, until you feel ready to return to the real world. Practice this guided imagery exercise frequently and you will be prepared to call it into your mind when faced with an attack of claustrophobia.

If you are still wondering how to deal with claustrophobia, consult your physician. If the above exercises are not effective, you may need more intense assistance in living with this potentially debilitating illness.

Colon cleansing has recently been advertised as an excellent way of ridding the human body of toxins. Moreover, weight loss is also associated with intestinal cleansing. From a scientific view, it is possible to shed weight by clearing out the bowels. The amount of weight that will be lost is highly individualized. Incorporating colon cleanses should be done intelligently; some products may do more harm than good. Having said this, there are a few recipes that have been developed as an affordable, alternative means to pre-made store formulations. The first of these is the salt water flush recipe.

Salt Water Flush

1 qt purified water
2 tsp salt (sea salt recommended)
Lemon or lime concentrate (optional)

Mix the above ingredients together. The liquid may be served cold or hot. It is advisable to drink this beverage first thing in the morning. Expect thirty-minutes to pass before any effects are felt. Cramping may occur.

Next up, we have the cayenne pepper cleanse, which also goes by the name of the Master Cleanse or Lemonade diet.

Cayenne Pepper Cleanse

24 oz water
3 oz maple syrup
3 oz lemon juice
1/4 tsp cayenne pepper

Blend all ingredients together. If preferred, a different citrus drink may be exchanged for the lemon juice. Serve heated or chilled.

Grade B maple syrup is suggested as it is a superior blend. Health food stores generally carry this type of syrup. However, if this particular grade cannot be found, chosing a brand that states 100% maple is a respectable substitute. Maple syrup is full of minerals which compliment the cayenne’s effect on the body.

Opting to perform a colon cleanse is not something that should be taken lightly. For five to ten days straight nothing else is to be consumed. At the end of this time period, however, less toxins will be in the body and a few pounds will have been lost. In addition, mental clarity should be improved. Every person may experience slightly different results.

Getting a massage can be a great way to relax and unwind. What many people do not know is that massages are a treat that can offer health benefits as well. Muscle massage can help one increase their fitness and overall health in a number of ways.

Massaging a muscle increases the circulation in that area, moving blood and oxygen throughout the muscle. When blood moves, it circulates waste products, often generated from exercising, and removes them from the muscle area so that they can be properly disposed of by the body. This is why deep massage is often beneficial soon after exercising. When the muscle is rubbed, the fibers within it are softened and relaxed. This relieves stiffness and gives one increased flexibility.

Overall, massage can reduce fatigue of the muscles and shorten one’s recovery time between workouts. Visiting an experienced masseuse is the best option for most people, because these professionals often have years of experience and know what they are doing. They can manipulate the muscles to achieve maximum results.

To become licensed as a masseuse, one usually needs a great deal of training and schooling, so one can trust that this person is a good one for the job.

A variety of people, particularly athletes, also explore self massage as a tool in their exercise regimen. One can add ten or so minutes of muscle massage to the beginning and end of their workouts in addition to their usual stretches to reap some benefits.

Ones masseuse, chiropractor, or even primary care physician may have some tips on self massage that one can use to improve their technique. Rubdowns are not only for those who exercise. Those with illnesses or temporary problems such as a broken limb can use massages to prevent muscles in affected areas from atrophying, or essentially dying. If one suffers from anemia, rubbing parts of the body can help increase the number of red blood cells in the body. Massage is a great tool for both the healthy and the ill, to achieve not only relaxation, but a healthier body.

Many people are familiar with the concept of high blood sugar levels, but they forget that normal sugar levels in the blood help the cells work and survive. Still, that high blood sugar that is one of the primary markers of type 2 diabetes presents a serious health problem. Most treatments for type 2 diabetes are centered around controlling these excess blood sugar levels and preventing the damage that they can cause. So, what exactly does it mean to have normal blood sugar levels?

Your blood sugar levels are always shifting. If your doctor suspects that you may have type 2 diabetes, one of the first tests for diabetes that the doctor will perform is checking your fasting blood sugar level. Doctors will usually do this test in the morning because it is easier to go more than eight hours without food or anything but water to drink when you spend most of that time sleeping. When doctors speak of normal levels, they are referring to a level between 70 and 100 mg/dL. The standard of diagnosis of type 2 diabetes is a fasting blood sugar level higher than 126 mg/dL.

After you have eaten, your body absorbs the energy in the food, which causes a rise in blood sugar. You will be having this reading taken two hours after eating, and it is commonly referred to as the postprandial reading. Not everyone agrees as to what a normal postprandial blood sugar reading is, but most people agree that it is between 70 and 140 mg/dL. Some more recent studies, however, indicate that it is better to use 120 mg/dL as an upper guide because of potential damage to the body above this level. Blood sugar levels below 70 mg/dL are called hypoglycemia, and can be just as dangerous as high levels.

Not having normal blood sugar levels is not the end of the world, so you should not panic if this is the case. There are many methods available to treat type 2 diabetes, which is becoming a more and more common condition every year. In fact, the incidence of type 2 diabetes all around the world, though primarily in the western world, is dramatically increasing every year. However, in some extreme cases, medication will be an important tool in ensuring normal blood sugar levels. Sometimes blood sugar needs to be brought under control very quickly, and lifestyle adjustment can take quite some time.

Your doctor will be able to provide you with any addition you may require about diabetes or how to maintain healthy blood sugar levels.
