There are many causes of back pain and many ways back pain can affect your quality of life. Laminectomy operation can include treatments for nerve damage, herniated discs and improper bone function. Laminectomy surgery is a procedure done specifically on the bones of the spinal column, or vertebrae. This surgery is called for when the vertebrae are protruding into a nerve or disc resulting in pain. A portion of the affecting bone is removed leaving additional space for discs and nerves and creating comfort during movement.

To prepare for the surgery, a series of simple tests is performed to determine the necessity and extent of the procedure. This will involve x-rays and MRIs and thorough examination from a back specialist. Typically, patients can live normally until two days before the surgery. At that point, doctors may recommend a specific diet and changes to any medication the patient may be taking.

On the day of the surgery, the patient will be prepped for anesthesia and the procedure begins. An incision is made in the affected area of the back. The spine is uncovered. A small amount of the vertebrae is removed and the wound is stitched. The entire is surgery is usually very short and recovery time can be as little as two days before patient discharge.

A rehabilitation process may be required for the patient to become accustomed to any new sensations during movement. Generally, the rehab process is simple. At least one post-operative examination will be required. This may be with the surgeon or another back specialist.
